Abstract

Introduction and clinical question

Despite the comprehensive regulation of the medication of racehorses, there is a lack of information relating to how and why medication is being used by trainers and racetrack veterinarians on a day-to-day basis. This research therefore seeks to answer the question, what are the current attitudes, practices, habits and beliefs of trainers and racetrack veterinarians regarding the medication of Victorian racehorses?

Materials and methods

28 Victorian thoroughbred racehorse trainers and 18 permitted Racing Victoria veterinarians completed an over the phone questionnaire regarding the medication of Victorian racehorses. Results The research identified several areas that are affecting how medication is being used in Victorian racehorses. Focus areas include attitudes of trainers and racetrack veterinarians to the administration and dispensing of prescription medications, the injudicious use of antibiotics, the poor uptake of diagnostics and a focus on treatment rather than prevention. Lack of trainer education, a complex trainer/veterinarian relationship, the shortage of equine veterinarians and competition amongst veterinarians have been highlighted as areas that require attention.

Discussion

The rules of Racing in relation to medication of racehorses are in place not only for welfare purposes but also for maintenance of integrity. A deeper understanding of current approaches to the medication of racehorses and quantification of some of the flaws within this system ought to have the flow on effect of improved equine welfare and safety. This in turn, addresses fairness in the sport, protects the investment of the customer, the integrity of racing, and ultimately racing’s social licence to operate.
