Horse racing in Mauritius started in 1812 during British rule. Over time, it developed into a strong and popular industry throughout the 20th century. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, the industry began to face more difficulties.

Racing on a small island brings certain advantages. With a limited number of horses, it is easier to control the population, gain detailed knowledge about each horse, and manage doping control more effectively.

At the same time, the challenges are significant. Importing horses is expensive and complicated, financial resources are limited, the race track requires constant upgrades, and there is a need for well-trained staff.

In conclusion, horse racing remains the national sport of Mauritius. It continues to have strong support from the local population, and it is expected to endure into the future
